Far-Infrared and Raman Scattering Spectra Due to the Two-Phonon Processes in Thallous Halide Crystals

The far-infrared absorption spectra due to the two-phonon difference processhave been observed. Peaks are found at about 27 and 35 cm=" in TICI and at35.2 cm = " in TlBr, which are due to saddle points in the difference energy surfaceof two phonons. The second order Raman spectra of TICI and TlBr at low tem-perature have been measured and the assignments of the spectral peaks to par-ticular combinations of two phonons are made. In the near resonant region, thescattering efficiency of the overtone of the LO phonon shows a more remarkableresonant behavior than that of other phonons. From the analysis of the experi-mental result by the theory of Ganguly and Birman, it is concluded that the twoLO phonons at the T point are successively scattered by the exciton, while twophonons of other modes with finite wave vectors are, presumably, scatteredsimultaneously.
