ESR and Optical Studies on Cl^-_2 in Single Crystals of (C_nH_<2n+1>NH_3)_2CdCl_4 with n=1,2 and 3

The crystals of (C. H.... NH,).CdCl. (n = 1, 2, 3) have been irradiated with X- and7-rays at 77 K. From ESR and optical absorption spectra, it is found that Cll iscreated in the layer of CdCl.. With angular dependence of hyperfine coupling conslant of Cl.- , the direction of its molecular axis is determined. The presence of any ab-sorption bands corresponding to vacancy centers, such as F center in alkali halides,has not been detected in the irradiated crystals. Metallic luster as a silver mirror hasbeen observed in the crystals which have been warmed up to room temperature afterirradiation at 77 K.
