Ultrasonic Study of NaNO_2.I. Anisotropic Character of Elastic Constants and Attenuation Coefficients

The temperature dependence of the elastic constants cg., cz., c.., cgq, c55 andc.5 of NaN0. was determined in the wide temperature range from 20 to 200'C.Near the antiferroelectric transition temperature (7'.), c.3, c.., c 55 and c55 arerather normal and show a slight bending at T.. On the other hand c.. and c..show softening towards T.. Corresponding to the anisotropic behavior of theelastic constants, the ultfasonic attenuation coefficients associated with c.. andc.. exhibit critical behavior and those associated with c33 and c55 show normaltemperature dependence. The above character in tlte elastic properties can beexplained in terms of the anisotropic coupling constants between the elasticstrains and the staggered polarization expected from a crystal symmetryconsi deration.
