Critical Behavior of Adiabatic and Isothermal Elastic Compliances of NaNO_2

The adiabatic elastic compliances, .vf, (/=l, 2, 3), of NaN0z were measurednear 7'.(l65.3'C) and 7'.(l64.0'C) by a composite-oscillator method. The isother-mat compliances, sf, were calculated from .s'f, and the data on specific heat atconstant pressure, C., and thermal expansion c:oefficients, p,. The isothermalcompliances tend to diverge toward 7'N, while the adiabatic compliances exhibitonly small cusps at this temperature. It was fottnd that the Pippard equationshold among sfj, 73, and C., and the anomalous part of .vf, is proportional to - TIC..From a thermodynamic relation between elastic compliances and specific heat,it is expected that, incontrast to a large 2-like anomaly of C., the specific heat atconstant volume shows only a small cusp-like anomaly at T.. This means thatthe growth of the long-range and short-range order is dramatically suppressedif the free thermal expansion of the crystal is inhibited.
