Dielectric Anisotropy in Antiferroelectric Copper Formate Tetrahydrate

The static dielectric constants of layered antiferroeleetric copper formatetetrahydrate were determined in the temperature range - 70'C to 20'C from theresult of the careful measurement of the dielec:tric dispersion. In spite of thestructural similarity of the hydrogen bond network along the a and b axes, thedielectric constant is highly anisotropic along the two axes. In contrast withthe large value of 'Z>0 (360 at 20'C), '*0 is very small (27 at 20'C). In addition,our experiment revealed the deviation of e5(, from the Curie-Weiss law and theunusual temperature dependence of a.g. It is shown that the orientational energyintroduced by Ishibashi et at. for the explanation of the antiferroelectric phasetransition is prinuarily responsible for this remarkable dielectric anisotropy.The ice rules imposed on the arrangement of protons exaggerate the anisotropyand explain the anomalously large Curie constant of e...
