Thermal Hysteresis Accompanying the Incommensurate-Commensurate Phase Transitions in Rb_2ZnBr_4 and Rb_2ZnCl_4

The dielectric constants of Rb.ZnBr. and Rb.ZnCl. exhibit remarkable thermalhysteresis over wide temperature ranges including their incommensurate-corn-me,nsurate transition points. The most characteristic feature of this thermalhysteresis is that it occurs even when a cooling run is turned to a heating run inthe incommensurate phases, i.e., the thermal hysteresis occurs even when thecrystal has no experience of phase transition. This phenomenon was studied indetail in this work. If the turning temperature T..,. is in the range where the in-commensurate wave number is independent of temperature (the range of constant(5), the thermal hysteresis does not occur, while if T.... is in the range of varyingincommensurate wave number (the range of varying J), the thermal hysteresisappears. This fact seems to support our idea that the thermal hysteresis of thedielectric constant is caused by pinning of the incommensurate wave.
