Peculiar Ferroelectric Domain Patterns Observed on Quenched Sodium Nitrite

Ferroelectric dornain patterns which appear vtnder three different qvxenching conditions havebeen studied by means of an etclaing technique. When a #-plate sanaple is quenched f'rom above'Z'C, a three-dizmensional pattern which varies dramatically along the thickness direction is of-ten observed. When single-domain samples are quenched frorn temperattrres between abotrtTc - 3O'C and 'Z'c, the polarization reversal occurs locally and two-diutaensional donuain pat-terms are foruned. The polarization reversal is catrsed by flue depolarization field wl?ich appearsduring quenching even when the electrodes ?tre short-circuited. XVhen a single-donaain sataaple isheated and qtrenched in the middle of the C-to-IC transition, the nucleated IC phase regions areconverted to ferroelectric domains. These domains ttnd those produced by tlae polarization rever-sat in the coznmestrrate phase regions are superposed to one another and make Lip complicateddotnain patterns.
