Laser-Induced Fluorescence Spectra and Phase Transitions in Biphenyl Crystals

• Fltrorescence spectra of biphenyl single crystals grown from methyl-alcohol soltrtion were studbed over a wide temperature range by the 295 nm UV light from a dye Baser system. A fluorescenceband near 530 nrn originating frorn photo-chemically produced irnpurities was found to be corn-posed of a zero phonon line and a phonon side band rnanif'esting sorne of the low frequency latticevibrations of the host crystal and the local unodes of the irnptnrity centers as well. We found thatthe 186 cm ' lattice mode is coupled with the excited state of the impurity and the temperaturedependence of its intensity reflects the orderness of the structural phase transitions of the hostcrystal at 40 K and 17 K.
