Optical Surface Phonon Modes in ZnO Small Crystals

Far-infrared transncission measurentent was xnade at 100111 temperature onZnO small crystals. Both spectra of santples obtaimaed by dry grinding Zn0counntercial powder and by burning Zn powder in air show a strong and broadabsorption peak at about 400 cm - ', and other two different peaks, which shift tolow frequency side as the refractive index of the mnatrix increases. Spectra areinterpreted fairly well by the generalized electroncagnetic scattering theory appliedto a sphere and a cylinder. No coupled [0 phonon-plasmon ntodes were observed.
