Elastic Constants of GaS and GaSe Layered Crystals Determined by Brillouin Scattering

The five independent elastic constants of GaS and GaSe have been preciselydetermined at room temperature from high-resolution Brillouin spectra in variousscattering geometries. The results are: c.j=I2.16, c..=3.52, c.3=1.14, c.33.79, Cqq'=O.95?, C55?i(C)) C12)'=4.30 fat GAS, and Cll-=l0.50, C12"=2.97,c..=l.22, c..=3.5l, c..=l.O0, c .6 =f(c.. -c..)=3.77 for GaSe, in units of10"'Nm '. We found a relatively low elastic aruisotropy, associating with thelayered structure of GaS and GaSe crystals.
