Infrared Study of Surface Phonon Modes in ZnO Small Crystals

• Infrared transmission spectra of Zn0 particles, whose diameters are muchsmaller than the wavelength of incident light, surrounded by various dielectricmedia with different dielectric constant have been measured in the photon energyregion from 300 to 600 cm '. Four transmission peaks were found in the photonenergy region between co.. (EJc: 406cm ', E//c'. 377cm ") and co.. (E@-c'.589 cm ",E//co 575 cm '),which showed features specific to the surface phononmodes. By taking account of both the optical anisotropy and the actual shape ofparticles, these four peaks were identified to be surface phonon modes of spherical(F), cubic (c) or cylindrical (cy) particles; coj mode, cod' mode, cod, mode andoverlapped peak of cod and co'7 modes, where the symbols ] and // stand for thecorrelation between the crystal axis and the electric field component of theincident light.
