Detection of Phase Relaxation in Resonance Fluorescence from Sodium Vapor by a cw Mode-Locked Dye Laser

The phase relaxation of tire resonance fltrorescence f'ronu soditrnn vapor XV8.S sttrdied by naeasuringthe contrast of interf'erence betxveeta the delayed fltrorescence pttlses. It is shown that tlae phaserelaxation time can be measured icy a conventionttl CNV mode-locked pico-second pulsed laserwithotrt any sophisticated appar?tttus to ?rctively lock the plaases of' exciting l?tser ptrlses. Usinga rnodified IN,4ichelson tyjce interf'eronaeter, and a honaetnade software lc?tsed on FFT algorithraa,we obtained a phase correlation tiztae as 300 ps with good SIN ratio. A local u'tairainatrtaa observedirn the decay ctrrve is attributed to the grotmnd state layperfine splitting and the tenajceraturedeperudence of' the phase relaxation time is explained by the clnange in the spread of atoznicvelocity distribution with tenaperattrre (Doppler broadening mechanisrau). Analytical calculatiotaindicates that when the laser bandwidth is nattch broader than the linewidth of the fltmorescence,as in the present case, the envelope of the inter'ferirrg fluorescence signal C2111 be represented byFourier transf'orzn of the absorption spectra. The ?tnalysis b?tsed on this approxinaation are ingood agreenaent with the restrlts obtained in the experitaaent.
