On the basis of the free energy of an incommensttrate systenr, a qualitative discus-sion is made of the time evolution of the spacing of discommensuration lattice duringthe first-order commensurate-to-incommensurate transition. II. is shown that in theearly stage of the transition when both phases coexist, the discommensuration latticehas a wider spacing l than the spacing l. in the final equilibrium state, and that afterthe crystal is covered with a lrttlice with l, the spacing is narrowed to l. by furthernucleation of discommensurations.
