Critical Phenomena and Anomalous Thermal Hysteresis Accompanying the Normal-Incommensurate- Commensurate Phase Transitions in Rb_2ZnCl_4

Measurements were made of the dielectric constant along the ferroelectricaxis z., the spontaneous polarization P, and the heat capacity c, of Rb.ZnCl.crystals in the temperature range from -l50'C to 150'C. The normal-incommensurate transition point determined as the peak position of c. lies at30.1 'C, which is about 6'C lower than the temperature for the maximum of e..It was found thxt e. and P. show a characteristic thermal hysteresis over a widetemperature range including the incommensurate-commensurate trarasitionpoint ( -80'C). The thermal hysteresis occurs ON/Cfl when heating and coolingruns are cycled within the incommensurate phase. The observed thermal hyster-esis is understood if we assume that defects such 215 impurities act as obtacles todiffusion of discommensurations and prevent the crystal from reaching tlnermalequilibrium.
