At various ultrasonic frequeuacies the attenuation coefficient and the sotmdvelocity together with the dielectric couxstazxt were simultarxeously naeasurednear the incommensurate-and-antiferroelectric phase transition temperature (7'N).The differemxce betweezu 7'N and the te.mperature where the maximum attenuationcoefficiezxt appeared was obtaimxed as a function of frequezxcy. According to thetheories of Lauxdau-Khalatnik6v and of Bruce-Cowley, the results could beex9laiuxed in terrris of the critical slowing-dowua of the amplitude mode below 7'N.In the case of the plazxe wave limit as in NaN0z the phase mode is not coupled withthe acoustic.mode contrary to the amplitude mode and thus no information aboutthe diffusionx-type phase mode could be drawn.
