X-Ray Study on the Thermal Hysteresis of the Modulation Wavevector in (Rb_<1-x>K_x)_2ZnCl_4

The modulation wavevector A.=(j - b)c' exhibits remarkable thermal hysteresisover a wide temperattn'e range including thetransition point in the mixed crystal system (Rb. ,K,).ZnC1. with x=O, 0.005,0.02, 0.28, 0.92, 0.997 and l. This hysteresis seems to correspond to the thermalhysteresis observed in the dielectric constant and to support the proposal byHamano et al. that the pinning of the modulation wave by defects causes thehysteresis. In the Rb rich case (.X"l<0.02), the parameter (5 has a tendency to befixed to the value realized at the normal-incommensurate transition point. Inthe K rich case (x=O.997), it decreases monotonically with decreasing tempera-ture, with a plateau in a middle range of the incommensurate phase. In the middlerange of x, i is pirmed to a constant value down to low temperature.
