Neutron Scattering Study on Phase Transition 'at 74 K in Rb_2ZnCl_4

The plaase transition at T.=73.5 K in Rb.ZnC].. is investigated by means ofneutron scattering at JRR-3M(4G). In phase 4 beloxv T., superlattice reflections ap-pear at tlae S-point, atacl their i?atensity increases continuously with decreasinag temper-ature. The critical index p estimated from tlae superlattice intensity is 0.37. Tlae extinction rule within the (It, k, 0) plane is consistent w'itla the space group Cl c 1. Phonondispersion of low enc:rgy is determined by inelastic scattering. Softening of livephonon branch is observed at the S-point as T. is aj>proached.
