A Structural Study of Phase Transitions in [N (CH_3)_4]_2ZnCl_4 at Low Temperature

The crystal structures of the monoclinic low-tervtperature phase (phase V) at 161 Kand the threefold-modulated orthorhombic phase (phase Vl) at 149 K of [N(CH.).1.ZnCl. are determined. The crystal structure of the threefold-modulated monoclinicphase (phase IV) at 223 K is also reexamined in order to investigate the structural relalion to other phases. The modulation pattern of the fivefold-modulated orthorhom-bic phase (phase III) reported previously is interpreted to be constructed with that ofphase IV. The structural changes on the phase transitions from the disordered phase(phase I) to phase V are described mainly by the rotations about the b- and c-axes andthe translations along the v-axis of ZnCl. and one kind of N(CH.).. On the phase Iransition from phase V to phase Vl, the magnitudes of the displacements of each iotasalong the b- and c-axes become larger than those on other phase transitions.[ bis (tetramethylammonium) tetrachlorozincate (II), crystal structure, X-ray lj diffractometry, structural phase transitionI
