Ferromagnetic Short-Range Correlations in a Two-Dimensional Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet with S=1/2 LiNiO_2

We have demonstrated that a two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnetwith spin=1/2 Limit. reveals ferromagnetic short-range spin correlations in forward scattering below T.. - 240 K, unlike other txvo-dimensiccnal trianglar lattice an-tiferromagnets. The intensity of diffuse scattering in the foc'ward direction appearsbelow T.., and monotor?ically increases as the te?nperature is lowered, then shows asharp divergence at T..-35 K. The present results suggest that a frozen spin patternwith the ferromagnetic short-range correlation similar to thcc spin glass phase is realized at the low-temperature phase below T.,.. [11 contrast, no appreciable intensitywas detected around the ( ;, {, n) positions, being consistent with early studies.
