Magnetic Excitation in Artificially Designed Oxygen Molecule Magnet(Condensed matter: electronic structure and electrical, magnetic, and optical properties)

We performed an inelastic neutron scattering experiment to study the magnetic excitation of O_2 molecules adsorbed in a microporous compound. A dispersionless excitation with characteristic intensity modulation is observed at &planc;ω=7.8meV at low temperature. The neutron cross section is explained by using a spin dimer model with an intradimer distance of 3.1Å. Anomalous behaviour in the temperature dependence is discussed in the context of enhanced magnetoelasticity in the soft framework of the O_2 molecule.
