Calorimetric Study of Several Cuprates with Restricted Dimensionality

By means of specific heat and magnetic stusceptibility measureznents we investigated the mag-netic cornpotrnds of various crystal structttre, CLlWO4, LiCuVO,j, CuSbzO?, CuNb3O5 andCuBizO,j, All of these ctrprates revealed strong one-dimensional (10) correlations persistingup to very high temperatures which are well explained by the S : 172 Heisenberg antiferro-magnetic linear-chain model. At lower temperatures they showed various long-range magneticordering except for CuNbzO(5. In particular, we observed a rather unusual transition at 2.4Kfor LiCuVOq which is conjectured to be a transition to the S z 172 quadratic Ising antiferro-rnagnet, thereby demonstrating a dimensional cross-over of correlations from ID to 2D. Themagnetic susceptibility and specific heat exhibit a critical point and a logarithmic divergence at2.4 K, respectively, as predicted by theory. We herein report the experimental results and thepreliminary analyses of these low-dimensional cuprates.
