Formation of metastable state molecular ions in etc:ctrota impact ionization ofsome atntospheric gases is studied by the neutralization method. In this naethod,the metastable neutrals produced by netttralization of metastable tons throughcollision with neutralizer gases are detected with a secondary electron multiplier.The secondary electron curreutts relative to the prinaary ion cuzrents are plottedagainst the energy of ionizing electrons, and called 7<-curve. Four breaks arefound on tlae 7?-curves for N." at ,G16.5, 20.9, 22.2 and 23.1 eV. The first onecorresponds to N. " (A '77.). = . . . and/or (X 'I: ). = 1 , . . The latter three correspondto the quartet states following 'J,'. Threc: breaks are fournd for CO" at 16.5,20.1and 21.8 eV. Two breaks are found for 0.' at 16..5 and 25.5 eV, the formercorresponding to 0."(a '77.). One break is found for NO' at 16.5 eV correspond-ing to NO"(a 'I").
