Ion Energy-Loss Spectroscopy for the Collision of Ar^+(^2P_J) with H_2 and N_2

Excitation and de-excitation processes in the collisions of Ar"('P,) with H. and N.were studied below 2 keV by high resolution ton energy-loss spectroscopy. For bothsystems, fine structure transitions between the different J states of Ar", vi brational ex-citations of target molecules for fundamental and harmonic mode were observed. Inaddition to them, coupled transition of fine structure transition and vibrational excita-Lion were observed. Cross sections were determined for all the transitions observed.The measured cross sections align in the reciprocal order of the energy defect AE.This simple A f-dependence is explained well by the assumption that all the transitiontake place through the two step process via charge transfer channel as an intermediatestate.
