Fine Structure Transition Cross Seetions of Ar^+ and Ne^+ in Collisions with Rare Grases

With a high resolution ion energy-loss spectrometer, fine structure transition crosssections for the collision systems of Ar" and Ne"-rare gases have been measured inthe incident ion energy range from 100 to 2000 eV. It appears that for each ion, themagnitude of the cross sections can be put in order with the absolute values of theionization energy differences between the projectiles and targets; l AE l . If o. is thefine structure transition cross section of the symmetric system, that of an asymmetricsystem becomes o. exp ( - l AE l / cx).
