Vibrational Excitation of H_2, D_2, N_2 and O_2 by Li^+ Impact in the Energy Range from 100 eV to 1200 eV

• Cross sections for vibrational excitation of H., D., N. and O. by Li" impactare measured with an ion energy-loss spectrometer. The cross sections are ob-tained from relative height of the loss peaks in a spectrum. The absolute crosssections are obtained above a few hundred eV. The maximum values of themeasured cross sections for r=0+1 excitation of H., D., N. and 02 are 7.5 x10 "cm', l.0xl0 "cm', 3.3xl0 "cm" and 1.6xI0 "cm', respectively.For H. and D2, r=0-+2 excitation is observed, while, it does not appear for N2and 0.. The measured cross sections are compared with the first Born approxima-tion assuming that the exctiation occurs only through polarization force. Thecontribution of the polarization force to the vibtational excitation of infraredactive molecules is estimated.
