Mossbauer Effect of Invar Type Fe-Ni-C and Fe-Ni-Mn Alloys in the Critical Concentration

The Mossbauer effect of Fe^<57> has been studied for (Fe_<1-x>Ni_x)_<97>C_3 with 0.28≤x≤036 and Fe_<65>(Ni_<1-x>Mn_x)_<35> with 0.05≤x≤0.3 alloys at liquid He temperature in order to know the mechanism of the abrupt decrease of the spontaneous magnetization of Fe-Ni alloys near the Invar region. A small decrease of the internal field in the Invar region is explained as a results of the decrease of the bulk magnetization. The Mossbauer spectra of Fe_<65>(Ni_<0.84>Nm<0.16>)_<35> under an external field of 50 kOe revealed that the iron atom has two electronic states, one is the magnetic state (μ_<fe>∼3μ_B) and the other the nonmagnetic state (μ_<Fe>∼0). The pattern of the Mossbauer spectra of Fe-Ni-C alloys are explained by assuming that a part of iron atoms becomes to the non-magnetic state depending upon their nearest neighbor environments. The origin of the anomalous thermal expansion of the Invar alloy is discussed in connection with the Mossbauer spectra at elevated temperatures.
