X-Ray Study of Crystal Distortions in RMn_2 Compounds (R:Y,Pr,Nd,Sm and Gd)

Powder X-ray diffraction measurements on intermetallic compounds RMn.(R : Y, Prj Nd, Sm and Gd) have been made in a temperature range from 69 to300 K. Below T.., every sample shows a large volume expansion, being as largeas 4.6'7. for YMn.. In addition, PrMn. and NdMn, having the hexagonal C14type of crystal structure are distorted into monoclinic below T.. On the otherhand, SmMn. having the same C14 type structure is distorted into orthorhombic.On the basis of a theory of magnetoelastic coupling the directions of magnetizationof these comt>ounds below 7'N were determined. The cubic C15 tvPe YMTl2shows a very small and probably rhombohedral distortion below T,., whereas thesame C15 type GdMn. shows no symmetry change.
