Large Thermal Expansions in Cr Mn Alloys at Low Temperatures

The thermal expansion of bcc Cr Mn alloys containing 41, 60 and 66% Mn havebeen measured from 2 to 100 K. The 41% alloy shows an utausually large positivecoefficient of expansion at low temperatures, the 66% alloy has a giant negativecoefficient and the intermediate alloy changes rapidly from a large negative coefficient(7'< 20 K) to a large positive coefficient above 20 K. The unusual magnitudes and tem-perature dependences are discussed briefly in terms of magnetccvolume and spin fluctuation effects.
