Forced Volume Magnetostriction and Induced Moment in GdCo_2

The forced volume magnetostriction, cictt/dH, of GdCo. has been measured bymeans of a three terminal capacitance dilatometer from 4.2 K up to 328 K. Thedctc/c3H shows a large negative value at 4.2 K and changes its sign from negativeto positive with increasing temperature. This anomalous temperature dependenceof dctc/dH is ascribed to the volume change associated with the indtmced momentof Co which depends on the effective field acting on the Co moment. A quantita-tjve estimation of dct:t/cAH based upon a molecular field approximation shows anexcellent agreement with the experiments. The large value of c3ctc/dH of tlais systemas well as its large spontaneous volume magnetostriction are explained as thevolume change catused by the indtuced moment of the Co atom.
