Magnetic Properties of Intercalation Compound : Mn_<1/4>MX_2

The Mn-intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides Mn.7.NbS. and Mn.7.TaS.have been found to be easy-plane type ferromagnets from the magnetization curves,while the magnetization curve of Mn.z.NbSe. shows a spin flopping behavior, sug-gesting a helical spin structure along the c-axis. The valency of Mn Jon is nearlydivalent from the meausremeruts of Hall coefficient and Curie-Weiss magnetic suscep-tibility. The saturation magnetization is, however, 3.7-4.1 p./Mn. Reduction of themagnetic moment from an expected value of 5 p./Mn for a Mn" ion may be pro-bably due to the Mn-Mn exchange interaction through the RKKY interaction.
