A simple model of lipid molecules is proposed. 'I'he properties of phase transi-tions in lipid systems are qualitatively studied in the framework of mean fieldapproximations. The interactions between the two alkyl chaitts and between thepolar head groups of lipid molecules are taken into account and those effects onthe phase transitions are investigated. The preser?t theoretical results indicatethat the chain flexibility and an appropriate strength of the chain-chain interac-lion in a lipid molecule are required for the existence of the liquid crystallinephase, and that the main transition temperatures are mainly affected by the interac-tions between alkyl chains whereas the melting transition ten?peratures stronglydepend on the interactions between the polar head groups rather than between thealkyl chains.
