Nematic Director Reorientation Dynamics Studied by Time-Resolved Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy

It is shown that the transient absorption behavior of the C≡N stretching band of the nematic liquid crystal 5CB experimentally obtained by the time-resolved Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) can be completely reproduced by the simulation based on Frank's elastic continuum theory. In particular, it is clarified that the fast relaxation process found in experimental results appears only when the applied electric field is high enough and the surface anchoring strength is strong, and that this is due to the director relaxation in the vicinity of the substrate surfaces.
