Dispersion Relation of Optical Eigen Modes in Ferroelectric SmC^* Distorted by an Electric Field

The dispersion relations of optical eigen modes in ferroelectric SmC^*, whose structure is distorted by a DC electric field perpendicular to the helical axis, are calculated by the 4×4 matrix method. When the effect of the spontaneous polarization on the elastic deformation is dominant over that of the induced polarization, or when the anisotropy of the dielectric constant ε_a<0, even if the latter is dominant, coupling between the slow (fast) forward mode and fast (slow) backward mode occurs as the electric field increases. When ε_a>0 and the induced polarization is dominant, such a coupling does not occur.
