The incidence angle dependence of the phase difference for 100 4-octyl-4$'$-cyanobiphenyl (8CB) liquid-crystalline free-standing films (FSFs) of thickness ranging from 2 to 9 layers was measured with high resolution by transmission ellipsometry using a photoelastic modulator (PEM). Dispersion was very small, and measurement results with high reproducibility were obtained.
