Anchoring Effects on the Layer Structures in Compressible Smectics

In this work, let us ixavestigate anchoring effects on the layer structure in cornpressible smectic phases. The layer anchoring force is taken into account in an analysis ofthe chevron layer structure in the smectic phase. Our numerical results show that theanchoring strength comparable to (elastic coefficient) / (penetration length) is enoughto orient the molecules at the boundary to such a preferred direction as the SiO cot-umns evaporated on the bounding plates. In a weztk anchoring limit, the presentresult is reduced to tlte previous one corresponding tc>the chevron layer structure. Ina strong anchoring limit with a small pretilt angle at the boundaries, however, a quasibookshelf layer structtare is found to be realised.anchoring effect, chevron layers, compressible smectics
