Hexagonal-Orthorhombic Phase Transition and Ferroelasticity in K_2SO_4 and K_2SeO_4

It is shown that (011 ) and (031 ) twin planes can be introduced in the orthorhombicphase of K.SO. and K.SeO., and both twin planes can be moved smoothly throughcrystals by appropriate external stress in the temperature range from about 300'C tothe orthorhombic-hexagonal phase transition point. It is inferred from the crystalstructure in the orthorhombic phase that S0j (or Sc:O'. ) radicals must have twostable states (the up and down states), and change from one state to another during thepassage of twin planes. It is suggested that the space group of the hexagonal phase isD.. -P6./mmc, and the hexagonal-orthorhombic phase transition is essentially due tothe ordering of S0.1' (or Se0,j ) radicals.
