Effects of sodium nitrite were investigated on the contractions in the isolated vas deferens from guinea pig, discussing the change of Ca availability. Low concentration of sodium nitrite increased the phasic contractions induced by K and ACh, but high concentration decreased these contractions. Sodium nitrite at low and high concentrations depressed the tonic contraction of K and the Ca-induced contraction. These results suggested that sodium nitrite altered the availability of intracellular Ca and also inhibited Ca influx. In addition, high concentration of sodium nitrite produced a slight spontaneous contraction by itself.
