<I>N</I>-Ethylcarbazole crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Pbca with fairly large unit cell dimensions of <I>a</I>=7.971(1), <I>b</I>=24.615(3), <I>c</I>=56.587(5) Å, <I>D</I><SUB>m</SUB>=1.17 g cm<SUP>−3</SUP>, <I>D</I><SUB>c</SUB>=1.168 g cm<SUP>−3</SUP> for <I>Z</I>=40. The structure was solved by the direct method and refined anisotropically by the least-squares procedure, <I>R</I>=0.062 for 5134 non-zero reflections. Five crystallographically independent molecules are not different from each other, the carbazole group is planar, and the ethyl group attached to the nitrogen atom is almost perpendicular to the carbazole ring. In the crystal, each carbazole ring makes a similar angle with the a axis [52 to 55°].
