Sources of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen in Otsuchi Bay on the Sanriku ria coast of Japan in the spring

We examined the interannual variation in the concentrations of dissolved organic carbon and nitrogen (DOC and DON, respectively), inorganic nutrients, phytoplankton biomass (concentration of chlorophyll a), and bacterial biomass in Otsuchi Bay, on the Sanriku ria coast of northeast Japan, opening to the east onto the Paci.c Ocean. The variation in DOC was correlated with both phytoplankton biomass (R0.427, n64, p0.05) and physical parameters (salinity: R0.376, n65, p0.01; log-temperature: R0.294, n65, p0.01), suggesting that both DOC released from organisms and DOC introduced from outside of the bay by river runoff and water exchange with off-shore water affect its dynamics in the bay. In contrast, DON concentrations were correlated with Chl a but not with salinity or temperature, suggesting that the .uctuation of DON is less af-fected by the introduction of DON from outside of the bay. A temperature.salinity diagram suggested that in.ow from the Oy-ashio Current lowers the C : N molar ratio of dissolved organic matter in the bay, whereas in.ow of riverine water and the Tsug-aru Warm Current raise the C : N molar ratio. These results suggest that the origin of water mass introducing to the bay is as im-portant as the frequency of water exchange with waters from outside of the bay in determining the variation and chemical com-position of dissolved organic matter in Otsuchi Bay.
