Six catechins, i.e., (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC), (+)-gallocatechin (GC), (-)-epicatechin gallate (ECg), (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg), (+)-catechin (C) and (-)-epicatechin (EC), were isolated from Japanese green tea (Thea sinensis L.). The isolation was guided by the shortterm in vitro assay for anti-tumor promoters, i.e., inhibition of 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA)-induced Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) activation on Raji cells. Of the catechins tested, EGC exhibited the highest inhibitory activity, whereas the activities of GC, ECg and EGCg were moderate. Insignificant inhibition was given by C and EC.
