Acteoside, 10-hydroxyligstroside, ligstroside and syringin were isolated from the bark of Fraxinus americana L., a natural medicine, "White Ash" used in North America as an equivalent of the natural medicines "Shinpi" (bark of F. japonica BLUME) in Japan or "Ash" (bark of F. excelsior L.) in Europe. The major constituents of F. japonica and F. excelsior are coumarins, but coumarins were not isolated from F. americana. The enzyme inhibitory and antioxidant activities of compounds isolated from F. americana were examined in comparison with those of coumarins from F. japonica.
