Xanthine oxidase inhibitors in the leaf part of the Chinese crude drug "Luoshiteng" originating from Trachelospermum jasminoides (LINDL.) LEM. (Apocynaceae) were investigated. Apigenin (1), luteolin (2) and luteolin 4'-0-glucoside (2f) showed strong inhibitory activity against xanthine oxidase. Compound 2f is the first flavonoid glycoside to be reported as a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. The structure-inhibitory activity relationships observed among mono-substituted glycosides of apigenin (1), luteolin (2), kaempferol (3) and quercetin (4) have also been discussed.
