Studies on Constituents of Plantaginis Herba 7 : Flavonoids from Plantago asiatica and P. hostifolia

Apigenin, luteolin, scutellarein, 6-hydroxyluteolin and their glucosides were isolated from Plantago asiatica and P. hostifolia, which have been used as herbs in Asia. The flavonoids in seven Plantago spp. (P. major, P. depressa, P. camtschatica, P. lanceolata, P. tomentosa, P. virginica and P. alpina) used as herbs in Asia and Europe were examined by HPLC. Plantaginin (scutellarein 7-O-glucoside) and homoplantaginin (scutellarein 7-O-glucoside 6-methyl ether) were detected in P. major as its major flavonoids, but none of the flavonoids detected in P. asiatica or P. hostifolia was detected in the other six species.
