Adjuvant Chemotherapy with Tegafur or Tegafur-uracil and/or Mitomycin C for Gastric Cancer Patients after Curability A Resection : a Randomized Study

A total of 104 gastric cancer patients underwent curability A resection was prospectively randomized and classified into 2 major groups, in order to clarify the efficacy of tegafur (FT) or tegafur-uracil (UFT) and/or mitomycin C (MMC) as adjuvant chemotherapy. Sixty-three patients in Groups 1A and IB received FT 600 mg/day and UFT 400 mg/day orally during the period over 12 months respectively. Forty-one patients in Groups 2A and 2B received a bolus injection of MMC 0.4 mg/Kg just after resection and the same doses and period of oral FT and UFT as Groups 1A and IB respectively. The disease-free curve in Group 1B was significantly (p<0.03) better than that in Group 1A and the 4-year disease-free rate was 97 and 78% respectively. The survival curve was better in the former than in the latter and the 4-year survival rate was 91 and 78% respectively. However, no significant difference was found in the survival curves and 11 background-variables between them. The 4-year disease-free and survival rates were 100 and 90% in Group 2A. The rates were 90 and 86% in Group 2B respectively. Among Groups 2A, 2B and IB, no significant difference was found in the disease-free and survival curves and also in the background-variables. The results suggest that UFT therapy is more effective for gastric cancer patients than FT therapy and that induction therapy of MMC is not necessary for the patients after curability A resection.
