Argyrophilic Nucleolar Organizer Regions (AgNOR) in Colorectal Cancer : Correlation with Tumor Progression and Nuclear DMA Ploidy

The score of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions (AgNOR) was determined in 54 colorectal cancer lesions, and the relations of AgNOR score (dot number/nucleus) to 12 clinicopathologic variables and nuclear DNA ploidy pattern of the cancer lesions were examined. Significant differences of the AgNOR score were found in 7 variables: the mean scores were significantly higher in the lesions with large size (≧6.0 cm), deep cancer invasion of se (a2) 〜 si (ai), positive node and liver metastases, high grages of lymphatic and venous invasion and Dukes C 〜 D stages than in the lesions with small size (<6.0 cm), shallow cancer invasion of mp 〜 ss (a1), negative node and liver metastases, negative or low grades of lymphatic and venous invasion and Dukes A 〜 B stages respectively. The mean score (3.89) of the lesions with aneuploid pattern was significantly higher than that (3.21) of the lesions with diploid pattern. These results suggest that AgNOR score of the cancer lesions is closely related to tumor progression and nuclear DNA ploidy pattern of colorectal cancer.
