Relations of plasminogen-activator inhibitor type-1 (PAI-1) expression in gastric cancer lesions to the clinicopathology and proliferative activity of cancer cells represented by argyrophilic nucleolar regions (AgNOR) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) were examined in 53 patients, to clarify the effects of PAI-1 on the clinicopathology and proliferative activity. The lesions with most all of the cancer cells stained by PAI-1 were treated as "positive", and the other lesions were treated as "negative". The lesions showed 37 positive and 16 negative PAI-1 lesions. Only one, histologic type, out of 8 clinicopathologic variables showed a significant difference between the lesions: differentiated adenocarcinoma was significantly (P<O.O1) more in the positive lesions than in the negative lesions. The means of AgNOR dot number per nucleus (4.92) and PCNA labeling index (77.09%) in the former were significantly (P<0.01 and P<0.05 respectively) higher than those (40.4 and 67.80%) in the latter. The results indicate that PAI-1 expression in gastric cancer lesions is correlated with tumor differentiation and the increased proliferation activity of cancer cells rather than with cancer invasion and metastasis.
