Postoperative survival of 196 colorectal patients over 70 years of age (aged group) was examined by comparing with that of 105 patients under 50 years of age (young group), and clinicopathologic variables between the groups were analyzed, to clarify the principles of prevention and early detection for the aged and/or elderly patients. Survival curve of the young group was not statistically different from that of the aged group, and the 5-year survival rate was 52.3% in the former and 49.6% in the latter. No significant difference between the groups was found in 10 out of 11 background variables strongly affecting survival. However, a significant difference (P<0.02) between them was found in the location of cancer lesions: rectal cancer was significantly more in the aged group than in the young group. These results suggest that age of the patients and location of the lesions do not affect the postoperative survival of colorectal cancer patients. For the prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer, periodical screening tests may be recommended, because this cancer increases rapidly in the Japanese.
