Photoluminescence in Amorphous C: H Films Prepared by Glow Discharge Decomposition of CH_4 or C_2H_6

Hydrogenated amorphous carbon films have been prepared by glow discharge decomposition of CH_4 or C_2H_6 gas. The films exhibit white photoluminescence with high efficiency and weak temperature dependence which can be observed even at room temperature. The peak energy and intensity of the emission band vary depending on gas temperature during glow discharge. The high efficiency and weak temperature dependence are suggested to result from a strong Coulomb interaction in photoexcited electron-hole pairs.
