The role of L-phenylalanine and its synergistic effect on the production of isobutene were investigated with both the living cells and a cell-free system of Rhodotorula minuta IFO 1102. Many aromatic carboxylic acids also had the same effect on the production of isobutens as L-phenylalanine. Cycloheximide, an inhibitor of protein synthesis, inhibited the synergistic effect of L-phenylalanine on the production of isobutene. Furthermore, the cell-free extract prepared from cells cultivated in the medium which contained L-phenylalanine had isobutene-forming activity. These results confirm than L-phenylalanine is an inducer of a tentative "isobutene-forming enzyme" in Rhodotorula minuta.
