Free Exciton Luminescence in Mixed K_<1-X>Rb_xI Crystals

In K. .Rb.l single crystals, a sharp luminescence line due to free excitons has beenobserved throughout the entire composition range of the mixture. The peak positionshifts almost linearly as a function of Rb concentration x, with a slightly downwardconvex curve. The quenching temperature of ltaminescence makes a considerablechange as a small amount of Rbl is added in Kl, and it becout?es constant for ,X'>0.5.These results are explained srttisfactorily in terms of the virtual crystal model. The E..(3.0 eV) luminescence observed in the Kl-rich crystals exhi'oits the same thermal quenching as the free exciton luminescence. Such a coincidence strongly suggests that theE. luminescence of Kl is ascribed to the radiative decay from a perturbed self-trappedexciton state which is formed as a result of the migration of free excitons to imperfec-tion site.[freecrystal 1f model, '-trapped ll excitonlexcuton luminescence, Kl, Rbl, alkali halide mixed crystal, vurtualexctton mugration, exciton self-trapping, potential barrier self
